It's A Complicated Journey
Understanding that scientists cannot confirm 100% that someone has CTE until post-mortem, I still want to shed some light on symptoms experienced that can be concurrently associated with other degenerative diseases. As CTE manifests differently in individuals, below is a list of common symptoms experienced in the four progressive stages of CTE.
-
Stage I
Headaches, loss of attention and concentration. Short-term memory problems, depression, aggressive tendencies, explosivity, and executive function issues.
-
Stage II
Depression, mood swings, headache, short-term memory loss, executive dysfunction, impulsivity, suicidal thoughts, language challenges.
-
Stage III
Memory loss, executive dysfunction, explosivity, attention and concentration issues, depression, mood swings, visuospatial difficulties, aggression, apathy and cognitively impairment.
-
Stage IV
The final stage includes severe cognition problems, memory loss, and dementia progression. Profound loss of attention and concentration, paranoia, depression, gait and visuospatial difficulties, executive dysfunction, language difficulties, explosivity and aggression. Parkinsonism also affects physical movements.
